Most are relying on community providers for mental and behavioral health services; RAND Research Improving the Quality of Mental Health Care for Veterans (2019) states to better serve the mental health needs of Veterans there needs to be access to an additional capacity of mental health providers who are trained in effective psychotherapies tailored to Veterans.
Background In May of 2022, Hays County (“the County”) engaged Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute to conduct a Mental Health Needs Assessment to assess the community’s mental health system and provide recommendations to increase the availability of resources to meet the needs of residents within the County. The assessment identified potential gaps in service and opportunities for improvement across an array of mental health services.
Co-located mental health professionals/services within the school setting has gained national recognition as a model for an accessible and cost-effective way to address student mental health needs, in particular students who otherwise do not have meaningful access to such services.
Services covered by this application include psychiatry training to increase access to mental health care services by expanding the mental health workforce via training of additional physician assistants and nurse practitioners (PA/NP Psychiatry Training Program).
