IN THIS PROPOSAL WE EXPAND THE STUDY AREA FROM THE LOWER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN TO THE ENTIRE GREAT LAKES BASIN AND WE WILL COUPLE THE MODELS AND INTEGRATE A CROP GROWTH MODEL (SALUS) TO DIRECTLY ASSESS THE EFFECTS OF AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF AND NUTRIENT LOADING ON PLANT COMMUNITIES AND ECOSYSTEM FUNCTION AT THE LAND/WATER INTERFACE.THE OVERARCHING GOAL IS TO QUANTIFY THE IMPACTS OF GLOBAL CHANGE (I.E., CHANGES IN LAND USE, POPULATION, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Tasks will include but are not limited to, working directly with farmers who own, manage, or rent land in the watershed to increase the development and implementation of best management practices (BMP) that address nutrient and sediment runoff from agricultural facilities and practices and identification and development of other innovative opportunities to improve water quality.

The award will be for a storm water monitoring system capable of automatically measuring agricultural land water runoff and wirelessly transferring the measurements to a computer via internet.Specific Requirements: The system must include (but not limited) three ISCO 6712 full-size portable samplers, three 4-bottle configurations for the 6712 full-size portable samplers, three tipping bucket rain gauges (0.01 in) working with the 6712 portable samplers

The award will be for a TOC-LCPH analyzer required to provide complete analyses collected from runoff water and soil leachate water samples.This is a mission critical instrument for the Genetics and Sustainable Research Unit for our research in developing sustainable agricultural cropping systems. We analyze both runoff water, and soil leachate.
