(S)TEM imaging and chemical analysis of materials and devices with atomic resolution is critical for a wide range of current and planned projects across multiple directorates at NREL. In addition, there is an urgent need for an instrument with in-situ, cryo-, time-resolved, and optical excitation atomic-scale microscopy capabilities.

The two electron microscope systems are to be used for high resolution biomolecular science at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at BNL. The microscope configurations require an automated cryogenic sample loader, and a high frame-rate direct electron detector capable of delivering long-term operation stability and accuracy for acquiring atomic resolution imaging of biological single particles.
The STM must produce atomic resolution images on Si(111) 7x7 reconstructed surfaces at low temperature as well as demonstrate atomic resolution imaging on a Au(111) surface at 10 K or below and use eddy current damping for isolation. The STM must be capable of STM imaging, STS, I(V), dI/dU, dI/dz measurements, spin-polarised STM and STS, and atom and molecule manipulation.
