The flight tracking system currently uses System Wide Information Management (SWIM) data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and provides information on the location of aircraft in flight, time of flight, aircraft type, airline (where applicable), and altitude. This system has a web-based public access component which allows citizens to view aircraft flight operations in the Sacramento region.

Due to the continuous anticipated growth and ability to support more cargo aircraft operations, there has been an associated increase in semi-truck / tractor-trailer traffic on Lindbergh Drive. This crucial roadway provides access to airport parking, terminal buildings, general aviation hangars, air cargo operations, employee offices, and other tenant facilities.

SMF is a Part 139 medium-hub airport and handled nearly than 13 million passengers in calendar year 2023, in addition to serving cargo and general aviation users. Due to significant growth over the past five years, demand at SMF now exceeds capacity in peak periods for gates, the automated people mover (APM), automobile parking, facilities for transportation network companies, rental car facilities, and roadways.

The airport is primarily a cargo and light general aviation airport with no scheduled passenger services, and has the available space, infrastructure, runway and taxiway requirements to support the needs of the 2021 MGE operations.
