The primary role of MDL is failure analysis support for the Space Launch System (SLS), the Commercial Crew Program (CCP), the Launch Services Program (LSP), the International Space Station (ISS), and support for multiple NASA Engineering Safety Center (NESC) investigations. The ESEM has the ability to utilize additional vacuum modes to allow analysis of materials sensitive to a hard vacuum such as plastics, ceramics, and biological materials.
Programs at KSC include, but are not limited to, the following: Exploration Ground Systems Program; Launch Services Program; Agency Management and Operations; Orion Program; Commercial Crew Program; International Space Station Program; Center Engineering, Safety, and Operations; and Space Launch System Program. SMASS will be performed primarily at KSC; however, resident support may be required at other NASA centers, facilities, or sites.
