The Air Force Rocket Lab (AFRL) at Edwards AFB requires modest pressure, modest flow cryogenic ball valves for use in the Multiscale Rocket Engine Test (MRET) Facility.  MRET is a new high-pressure, small-scale rocket engine test facility that is being constructed. In addition to 10,000psi flow systems, this facility has several lower pressure flow systems needed to maintain cryogenic temperatures.

The Materials Measurement Science Division has the need for a cryogenic ball mill.  The mill will be used to grind polymers and real-world plastic samples.  A cryogenic mill is necessary to freeze polymers to temperatures below their glass transition temperature (Tg).  Above Tg polymers do not mill but instead deform elastically.  At temperatures below Tg , polymers become brittle and can be broken down (milled) into fine particles.
