Description: Researchers at Idaho National Laboratory have developed a novel architecture for integrating battery and ultracapacitor systems (known as Hybrid Energy Storage Systems or HESS) with a hydropower plant to provide fast frequency regulation in a competitive electricity market.
Electrochemical energy storage is typically viewed as the bidirectional interconversion of electricity and chemical potential energy using electrochemistry for the purpose of storing electrical energy for later use, with lithium (Li)-ion and lead acid batteries being representative of the current generation of electrochemical energy storage.
Energy Storage System (BESS), as described in Request for Proposal (RFP) No. 1779 contained herein as part of this project.
