Continuation of 2016/17 Project for Infrasound Sensor Technology of Avalanches

Infrasound propagates hundreds of miles and can penetrate walls, mountains and other obstacles without loss. The NASA infrasound sensor filters out wind noise that can interfere with detection, while using less power and much less space than currently available solutions. As a result, the NASA infrasound sensor can detect tornadoes and clear air turbulence hundreds of miles away; an array of 30 could cover the entire continental US.

The hardware associated with these research efforts, the Seismological-Infrasound-Acoustic-Meteorological (SIAM) array, is a rapidly fieldable, man-portable, self-powered, hardened sensor kit made from COTS components.  These arrays utilize infrasound sensors from Hyperion Technology Group, Inc. to meet the requirements of our current research task in terms of power consumption, frequency response, and logistics.
