The facility boundary (Attachment A) is approximately 240 acres and the Landfill currently operates within an active disposal area of 35 acres. The Landfill has a design airspace capacity of 7,560,273 cubic yards and has received 50,000 – 60,000 tons of garbage annually for the past 5 years. The most recent Landfill Capacity and Closure Report (2023) estimates that the Landfill has of remaining life of 37 years.
With less than 8 years of landfill space remaining at Dane County's Landfill Site No. 2 (Rodefeld Landfill), Dane County has an opportunity to plan for its changing waste stream and purposefully set the foundation to advance the region towards a circular economy. Dane County’s vision for the next site includes the development of a Sustainability Campus, or sustainable business park, that will be co-located next to its new landfill site.

This work is intended to address remaining questions regarding the contribution of landfill leachate to influent and effluent concentrations of PFAS at WWTFs (Phase I) and assess the potential for PFAS contributions to the environment from WWTFs (Phase II).
Approximately 52% of that solid waste ends up in sanitary landfills, with the remaining 48% informally disposed of in open dumps or bodies of water (oceans, lakes, and rivers). Of the waste that is appropriately disposed of in sanitary landfills, 59% are products that could have been otherwise recycled or reused. Specifically, plastic represents 10% of the total waste stream in Peru, but only 1.9% of those plastics are recycled.
