This requires a pyrolyzer to heat MP samples in an inert atmosphere to produce pyrolyzates that can be separated and identified on a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer. Comparison of this data with mass spectra in a polymer pyrolysis library and that of known polymer standards will identify the type of plastic leading to elucidation of the MP source.
