Energizing to superconductivity requires the magnet to be cooled to 4 K, which is only achieved and maintained through the use of cryogenic liquids, specifically liquid helium and liquid nitrogen. As such, the ACC requires liquid helium to be used in the magnetization of the NMR instruments in B1 and CLL Labs.

Liquid helium is used to cool NMR superconducting magnets, and also used for low-temperature experiments in several laboratories within the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), at the main campus of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in Bethesda, MD 20892.

The magnets are the center components of 18 NMR spectrometers, representing a total purchase value of ca 18 million US$, and are kept at ultra-low temperature (4.2 K) to maintain their superconducting properties. Failing to periodically refill the magnet with liquid helium will return in quenching the system, which can irreversibly damage the magnets.
