The stepped chute structure will armor the slope at the downstream end of the spillway and convey spillway flow from the higher elevation of the spillway channel to the lower elevation of Pipestem Creek. The stilling basin will dissipate the hydraulic energy of flow exiting the spillway before it enters the creek.
The Pipestem Dam Spillway Modification Project on Pipestem Creek, about four miles northwest of Jamestown,North Dakota. Contract will consist of a stepped roller compacted concrete (RCC) spillway chute structure with an integrated three-stage labyrinth crest control structure, approach walls, and stilling basin. Together, the chute structure and stilling basin will prevent the initiation of spillway erosion at the downstream end of the spillway.

The crest and spillway bridge occupy ND State Highway 200 which is a major highway through central North Dakota. The approximately 3,000-foot-long spillway is excavated in the left abutment with a design crest elevation of 1,826.2 NAVD88. The chute-type spillway structure consists of a crest structure (including Tainter gates and a bridge), paved chute channel, and a stilling basin.
The objectives of the project are to remove the rock and vegetative debris from the spillway, install rock anchors and rockfall mesh on the slope above the spillway and repair damage to the concrete in the spillway as necessary. The slope above the spillway is steep and varies from approximately 60 to 140 feet in height. **REVISED** The Contractor is responsible for developing a plan to access the spillway.
