With input from NIOSH-NPPTL healthcare and respiratory experts, conceptual prototypes of the Reusable Healthcare Elastomeric Respirators (RHER) were produced for bench testing and evaluation by researchers at NPPTL. This conceptual design need to be refined and elevated into a prototype that can be used in hospital demonstration studies.
NPPTL has a requirement for Reusable Healthcare Elastomeric Respirator Improvements and Exhaled Breath Filter Adaptors. The prototypes required under this effort must follow the same design as previous research efforts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Acquisition Services (OAS) on behalf of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) has a requirement for analysis to assess Best Practices of Reusable Elastomeric Respirators in Healthcare Settings.

Another study by the Veterans Health Administration determined that stockpiling elastomeric respirators, in addition to other types of respiratory protection, may result in considerable cost savings.However, reusable elastomeric respirators are infrequently used in U.S. healthcare delivery, so most HCP have little or no experience with them.
