NASA/Ames Research Center (ARC) has a requirement for Flight Deck Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) Research Project Phase III is to improve aircraft surface movement by creating a seamless flow of data to stakeholders to support effective decision making. The work is being accomplished in phases as feasibility and direction are assessed.
The FAA is accepting comments by the response date noted, and is contemplating a subsequent final solicitation release in the near term.The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is undertaking the Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) to provide enhanced visibility and situational awareness of surface movement areas, such as runways and taxiways, to airports which do not currently have existing surface surveillance capabilities.
Existing technology at some airports provides situational awareness by enabling controllers to see the position, movement, and relative location of aircraft and ground vehicles on the airport surface movement area and approach and departure routes, including aural and visual safety alerts of potential runway collision situations. Situational awareness is crucial during periods of low visibility when factors like weather may pose challenges.
