The MiniPAT is specifically designed to track the large-scale movements and behavior of fish and other animals which do not spend enough time at the surface to allow the use of real-time Argos satellite tags. SPOT tags on the other hand send out short transmissions to the Argos satellite system when at the surface. Wildlife Computers has designed these tags specifically for applications like the current project.
