One condition that impacts communities is environmental injustice. Environmental injustice can manifest as land use code and permitting that allows for the development of the built environment that doesn’t consider the needs of the people or the natural environment in which they live, and work. The Department seeks to implement HIAs to address environmental injustice in land use code and permitting. The Tideflats Subarea Plan is a long-range planning effort by the City of Tacoma to create a long-term vision and more coordinated approach to development, environmental review, and strategic capital investments in the Tideflats – Tacoma's hub for heavy industry and manufacturing.
