Founded in 1953, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute(HHMI) aims to advance the discovery and sharing of scientific knowledge to benefit humanity. HHMI invites applications for the Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program. The program will support basic researchers—including physician-scientists—who have strong potential to become leaders in their fields and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion through their mentorship understanding of systemic exclusion and marginalization in science of trainees from different backgrounds.Scholars will prioritize scientific excellence in their research while creating an equitable and inclusive lab climate that serves as a model within their institutions and beyond. Eligible research areas include all basic biomedical science disciplines, including plant sciences, evolutionary biology, biophysics, chemical biology, bioengineering, pharmacology, developmental biology, parasitology, neurology, and computational biology.Scholars will receive potential support valued at up to $8.6 million per scholar over the 10-year period including full salary and benefits, a research budget of approximately $400,000 per year over the first five years ($600,000 per year during the second five years), and eligibility to participate in the HHMI capital equipment purchasing program. They also participate in professional development to advance their leadership and mentoring skills.To be eligible applicants must have a PhD and/or MD (or the equivalent) and be in a tenure-track faculty position (or equivalent) at an eligible U.S. institutions.
