The project will consist of a new building located at the terminus of the Westgate ramp on the north side of the new West Quad. The West 1 building will be PSU’s new “Heart of The College of Engineering” and “iconic arrival point at the West Campus”, housing multiple College of Engineering programs including: The Department of Aerospace and Acoustics; the Department of Architectural Engineering; and the Department of Civil Engineering. The space typologies in the program include the following: General Purpose Classrooms, Teaching Labs, Wet Labs, Small Equipment
Labs, Large Equipment Labs, Computational Labs, Office and Departmental Commons, Conference Space, the Learning Commons, general Building Support spaces, and a Cafe. All have different standards, subgroups and benchmarks that continue to be verified and evolve through the design process. West 1 will have a large auditorium in the basement, as well as additional general-purpose classrooms of various sizes, group study rooms, faculty offices, and multi-media production rooms. There will be teaching labs and various specialized research labs such as the Pressurized Wind Tunnel, Anechoic Chambers, and Flight Simulators.
