Absorbents work by taking up liquid or gas into spaces within and throughout the material. Absorption involves dissolution or diffusion. In absorbent materials, the atoms, molecules, or particles are taken internally in its interstice, or chambers, like in a sponge.
Adsorbents accumulate liquid or gas on the surface of a solid material. Adsorption is a consequence of surface energy; atoms on the outer surface experience a bond shortage because they are not completely surrounded by others.
