Innovative and progressive programming should include an eye toward food and health equity, in addition to meeting the need of underserved and marginalized communities. The Montgomery County Anti-Hunger Network (MAHN), created in 2014, is a coalition of food providers and other interested parties, who work to maximize the acquisition and distribution of nutritious food to those in need in Montgomery County. We would want the designated lead agency to collaborate with MAHN and incorporate some of the lessons learned over the last few years into action during the contract period.

Such ideas include: a high emphasis to transition current pantries to choice pantries, increasing fresh produce donations to all partner pantries, partnerships with Community Supported Agriculture (CSA’s), technology upgrades, capacity building across the network, regional distribution organizations (RDO’s) to allow for more food sharing, and expansion of resource development opportunities.
