By implementing a suite of forest health treatments, including restoration thinning, fuels reduction, shaded fuel break implementation, sediment source reduction, and prescribed fire, the project aims to improve the health and resilience of the Preserve’s forested ecosystems. Midpen does not seek to generate a profit through forest health treatments, which will be implemented solely for ecological benefit. Any revenue derived from merchantable timber removed
through forest health treatments will be used to fund restoration work. The project area comprises four forested sites across the Preserve, spanning approximately 308 acres. Within two of these sites, totaling 121-acres, forest health treatments are anticipated to result in the generation of merchantable timber and therefore require a Timber Harvest Plan (THP). Forest health treatments within the remaining two sites, totaling 187-acres, will not result in any merchantable timber. For these areas and wherever prescribed fire will be used, project implementation will occur through Midpen’s certified Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Wildland Fire Resiliency Program (WFRP). The project will be implemented in two phases, as described in the Scope of Work. The initiation of Phase II is contingent upon the successful completion of Phase I and is at the sole discretion of Midpen.
