Introduction The State of Connecticut, Connecticut State Library ( CSL) is recruiting within the agency for a Library Technical Assistant. This position would be reporting to the Assistant State Archivist in the State Archives Unit. The incumbent in this position assists in the physical and intellectual management of archival and manuscript collections in the State Archives including working with state agencies, towns, and private individuals to coordinate the physical transfer of one of a kind permanent archival records; arranging and describing materials according to archival best practices; and locating, retrieving, and transporting materials between facilities for patron use. The mission of the Connecticut State Library is to preserve and make accessible Connecticut's history and heritage and to advance the development of library services statewide. The Archives contains more than 48,000 cubic feet of records documenting the evolution of state public policy and its
implementation, the rights and claims of citizens, and the history of Connecticut and its people from the earliest days of the colony of Connecticut through the early 21st century. Since 2000, the State Archives brings in an average of 931 cubic feet of physical records annually. We seek a skilled Library Technical Assistant to help manage and preserve our one of a kind historical collection. Principal duties of this position will include but are not limited to: work with state agency or town staff or private donors to arrange dates and times for transfer of records; ensure that materials are properly documented and prepared for transfer; analyze collection contents for major subject categories, organize containers by number or by subject; create container lists; label containers; update collection management system; locate and retrieve physical items to fulfill agency and patron requests; scan items to fulfill state agency and patron requests; transport requested materials between state library facilities using the assigned cargo van; perform stack maintenance activities including sorting, shelving, and reshelving archival materials appropriately, and shifting archival materials as necessary to optimize shelf space usage. The successful candidate must also have: the ability to lift 40 pounds; a valid Connecticut drivers license and motor vehicle liability insurance; and the ability to drive a cargo van. This is a full time, 40 hours per week position, Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm. This position is located at 75 Van Block Ave., Hartford CT. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In the State Library, a state college or university or a state agency, this class is accountable for performing a full range of supportive and/or paraprofessional tasks in any function of the library including acquisition, cataloging, interlibrary loans, reference and circulation. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Circulates books and other library materials using manual and/or automated systems; performs catalog maintenance activities such as filing, transferring, updating, revising and withdrawing cards/files; retrieves bibliographic information from automated library systems for circulation, interlibrary loan or copy cataloging purposes; receives and processes orders for print and non-print materials; performs and/or supervises performance of stack maintenance activities including sorting, shelving and shifting of material; assist patrons in locating and using library materials and equipment; compiles statistics on particular function of library; pulls and organizes library materials for binding; may enter bibliographic information onto automated library systems; may process interlibrary loan requests by filling those received from other libraries and/or searching for and requesting materials from other libraries; may instruct and supervise students and others in performance of library activities; may check in books and other library materials; may process invoices; may be responsible for monitoring student hours and payroll for those assigned; may correspond with vendors, publishers and library patrons as required; performs related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY Basic knowledge of library science techniques and practices; basic knowledge of library classification systems; knowledge of recordkeeping procedures; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to operate automated library systems. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Two (2) years of experience in library work. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED Two (2) years of college training equalling sixty (60) semester hours with at least twelve (12) semester hours in library science may be substituted for the General Experience.
