Introduction The State of Connecticut, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is recruiting for a Head Motor Vehicle Examiner within the Vehicle Business & Regulation (IRP) Unit at the Wethersfield location. The Head Motor Vehicle Examiner will serve as a lead position to other Motor Vehicle Examiners. The Head Motor Vehicle Examiner position will assist in the assigning of duties and review work for accuracy; oversee and coordinate the daily work involved in the issuance of official motor vehicle documents; examine and process applications and supporting documentation; issue official documents; handle handicap plaque applications and approvals, registration renewal, processing of titles releases and address changes. The Head Motor Vehicle Examiner role handles the monthly clearinghouse payments, handles the complex transactions, and works with other states on any issues that may arise. This position will also take the lead on handling inquiries regarding the Vista system that is
used to process IRP registrations. The duties listed here may not be inclusive of all job duties and responsibilities for this role. Selection Plan In order to be considered for this job opening, you must be a current State of CT employee of the Department of Motor Vehicles, who has permanent state status*, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening. You must specify your qualifications on your application. * For employees in the classified service, permanent status is obtained after successful completion of a working test period. For employees in the unclassified service, permanent status is obtained after serving in a position for at least six months (full-time or full-time equivalent). This position will be filled in accordance with reemployment, SEBAC, transfer, promotion and merit employment rules. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In branch offices and units within the central office of the Department of Motor Vehicles this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for a unit responsible for the issuance of operators' licenses, titles and/or registrations. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Assigns duties and reviews results for accuracy, effectiveness and conformance with policy; reviews and evaluates courtesy and attitude toward the public and other employees; studies and analyzes office tasks performed; oversees and coordinates the daily work involved in the issuance of official motor vehicle documents; prioritizes, schedules and assigns duties; maintains proper workflow; provides on the job training to unit staff; resolves individual work-related problems; maintains daily records; orders supplies; ensures the accuracy and efficiency of unit work; completes inventory and production reports; obtains from and provides information to a variety of personnel within other divisions, departments or the public; examines and processes applications and supporting documentation; issues official documents; operates automated and other office equipment; performs related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY Considerable knowledge of the functions and activities of the Department of Motor Vehicles; considerable knowledge of office systems and procedures; knowledge of record-keeping; skill in operating office equipment; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; skill in examining documents to determine compliance with established requirements; ability to lead employees; ability to read, understand and apply motor vehicle laws, regulations, policies and procedures; ability to resolve difficult office situations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Five (5) years of clerical experience. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE Two (2) years of the General Experience must have involved the issuance of official documents requiring the examination of applications and supporting documentation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED 1. College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling six (6) month of experience to a maximum of two (2) years. 2. Two (2) years as a Motor Vehicle Examiner or one (1) year as a Motor Vehicle Examiner Specialist may be substituted for the General and Special Experience required.
