The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) is providing public notice that the Tsesyu Gas Station located at Mile 210 of the Parks Highway in Cantwell , Alaska is out of compliance with State and Federal underground storage tank (UST) regulations and will be taking action to prevent the release of a hazardous substance to the environment. ADEC will remove an estimated 10,000 gallons of fuel from three USTs at the gas station. The UST system relies on cathodic protection to protect the tanks from corrosion, and the tanks have not been properly inspected during the last three years, as required by state and federal regulations, increasing the risk of a release to the environment. ADEC will remove the fuel unless immediate action is taken to address the regulatory violations by Monday October 3 rd.The site, which currently appears to be abandoned, was operated under the name Tsesyu Service Station until about 2018. The UST system at the gas station ceased operating but
remains in place. The three tanks, made of single-walled steel, are especially susceptible to corrosion and leaking, and can contaminate shallow groundwater when left unmonitored. This can pose a threat to both the surrounding environment and to the public. The Department has made efforts to contact the listed owners of the property but has not been successful. A court has granted ADEC a warrant authorizing the agency to remove the fuel found in the USTs. The fuel removed from the USTs will be properly transported and disposed of by a qualified disposal/oil-recycling facility in Alaska and the USTs will be secured. If you are the property owner, have any contact information that you can provide for the property owner, or have any questions about the fuel removal, please contact Bill O’Connell from ADEC at bill.oconnell@alaska.gov or Masha Kazakova from Department of Law, at masha.kazakova@alaska.gov .
