The City of South San Francisco invites muralists and urban surface artists to submit their qualifications for the Mural and Urban Surface Public Art Projects. The City intends to create a list of pre-Qualified Artists through this RFQ. Artists chosen for the pre-Qualified list will be eligible to be considered for the upcoming public mural and urban surface art projects in South San Francisco. Inclusion in the Pre-Qualified Artists list will be for a period of three years. Inclusion in the Pre-Qualified Artists list does not guarantee a commission.Possible mural and urban surface project locations may include, but are not limited to, a range of outdoor and indoor sites; surfaces may include concrete, plaster, wood, asphalt (such as crosswalks), vinyl or poly-vinyl mesh, and other materials. Sites may have pre-existing paint or other treatments. They may also include digitally projected images.This opportunity is open to professional mural and urban surface artists or art teams
residing in the United States. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal of qualifications.The City of South San Francisco may, at any time, expand or update the pre-Qualified Artists list by issuing a subsequent call for artists or by other means.The City of South San Francisco is a strong proponent of inclusiveness of race, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, and socioeconomic background in all aspects of the community. Application Requirements PRE-QUALIFICATION PROCESSAn Artist Selection Panel will review all eligible submittals and make a recommendation for the artists to be included on the Artist Pre-Qualification list. Staff will preview all submissions for completeness prior to Selection Committee review and may reject incomplete or inappropriate submissions. Proposals are not requested and will not be reviewed at this time.The City of South San Francisco anticipates upcoming art opportunities and will be issuing Request for Proposals shortly after creating the Artist Pre-Qualification list. Prequalified muralists and urban surface artists may be invited to submit a proposal for a design idea for these mural and urban surface art opportunities, once identified. Details will be provided if/when a muralist is pre-qualified for a project. Qualifications only will be accepted with this call.Prequalified artists will remain on the list through June 2026. Prequalified artists may be considered for any mural project initiated prior to that date. Eligibility Criteria The Artist’s Qualification submittals must include:1. Interest Form Cover Sheet– Fill out completely including rate information. 2. Artist Bio – Introduce yourself, or your team, and your artistic perspective in the realm of public art. (3000 character maximum)3. Professional Artist Resume and References – current resume that outlines your professional accomplishments as an artist. For emerging artists, you may list student projects. (2 pages maximum)4. Portfolio Images – Submission should include visual representations of samples of your past artwork appropriate to this Call. Up to 5 photos of past murals and urban surface art, note artwork title, date of completion, location, significant materials, dimensions, budget (if publicly available) and commissioning agency. Additional examples may be provided via a link to a website or similar well-labeled site. For any submissions with community engagement in the design or painting, please add a sentence or two about the community engagement you facilitated.If you were a member of a team or otherwise worked with other artists on a project you are submitting for consideration, please clearly state your actual role in the creation of the work.
