CITY OF SUN PRAIRIEJOB DESCRIPTIONStaff Engineer I/ IIDEPARTMENT: EngineeringCLASSIFICATION: NonunionREPORTS TO: City EngineerREVISION DATE: December 27, 2021GENERAL PURPOSE:This is professional civil engineering work. Involves the application of professional engineering skills and knowledge to civil engineering projects in connection with the design, construction, inspection, and preparation of plans and specifications for public works projects. Requires considerable judgment, initiative, and professional knowledge and responsibility for making technical decisions on engineering problems and plans.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Performs diverse technical work in the design of streets, storm and sanitary sewers, and other civil engineering projects.Under limited managerial direction; prepares and supervises the preparation of plans and specifications for public works projects.Prepares cost estimates for large construction projects and maintains engineering records.Serves as project engineer

on various public works projects; makes reports of work completed by contractors.Supervises and to a lesser degree, participates in the inspection of engineering construction projects; checks for conformance with plans and specifications; answers complaints and provides general instructions.Reviews construction plans and specifications submitted by developers' engineers to assure compliance with the City Land Division Ordinance.Reviews the work of subordinate sub professional personnel engaged in office and field activities.Serves as the City's liaison with developers, contractors, and general public. Participates in the internal TRC (Technical Review Committee) meetings to discuss city concerns with development projects in the city.Performs storm water & erosion control inspections as part of the City's MS4 permit requirementsAssists in review and approval to storm water and erosion control submittalsREQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK:Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college/university and three years' experience in performing professional level civil engineering duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Advanced knowledge and experience with modern principles and practices of civil engineering, land and engineering survey systems, and drafting.Advanced knowledge and experience with modern methods and techniques as applied to the construction of public works projects.Experience adopting approved engineering methods and standards to the design and construction of a variety of municipal public works projects.Experience preparing technical reports for review by City Engineer.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver's License.State of Wisconsin Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.PAY & BENEFITS: Starting pay range $75,000 - $85,000 annuallyThe City offers a full benefits package including health/vision, dental, long term disability, parental leave, flexible spending accounts, 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, and WRS retirement plan.
