Fusion Development Support and Demonstration Activities OpportunitiesOn September 22, 2002 the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced up to $50 million to launch a new milestone-based fusion development program. The Idaho National Lab (INL), managed and operated by Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC (BEA), has been involved in fusion research for over 30 years in support of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) mission of seeking clean, safe and economic fusion energy. The INL’s Fusion Safety Program (FSP) is the Office of Fusion Energy Science’s (OFES’s) Lead Laboratory for Magnetic Fusion Energy (MFE) Safety. INL is interested in partnering with the Fusion Industry to support development and demonstration activities. These are some of the unique capabilities that can be leveraged:INL is excited to discuss the collaboration opportunities leveraging on the following capabilities:Enabling nuclear technologies (e.g. tritium, beryllium, plasma facing components, liquid metal and molten salt
breeders)Accelerating fusion materials qualification through Advanced Test Reactor testing (e.g. boosted fast spectrum test rig)Accelerating FPP demonstration through the National Reactor Innovation Center (e.g. Demonstration test beds, experimental facilities, Virtual test Bed, regulatory risk reduction activities)Modeling and simulation for FPP safety assessment (e.g. MELCOR-Fusion, used for ITER licensing as nuclear installation)Multi-physics modeling and simulation (e.g. MOOSE-TMAP)Digital Innovation (e.g., digital twin, resilient control system, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning applications, advanced nuclear sensors and instrumentation)Please check the following links for more information:Detailed background information & presentations related to INL’s capabilities to support fusion are available, and being regularly updated, in this folder:
