Notice of City of Kotzebue Class II MSW Landfill Permit

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) proposes to issue Solid Waste Disposal Permit No. SW2A010-23, to the City of Kotzebue, to operate a Class II Municipal Solid Waste Landfill.

Location: East Side of Air Force Road Two Miles South of Kotzebue, AK 
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:The landfill will serve the community of Kotzebue, AK and allow for the disposal of an annual average of less than 20 tons per day of domestic and commercial refuse at the community 45-acre site. The facility includes a baler building which is not located within the landfill boundary. The City of Kotzebue (COK) plans to separate out scrap metal and potentially hazardous wastes as much as practicable at the baler/recycle facility prior to disposal into the landfill.
 
This facility was originally permitted as a freezeback landfill and the COK is requesting a design change to allow for

operation of a non-freezeback landfill.  All design and operation information required in the permit application has been updated based on the proposed design change. Given this proposed design change, ADEC is providing public notice for and requesting comments only on the proposed new design.
