The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) initiative will issue a new solicitation in Spring 2024. The HPC4EI is the umbrella program for the HPC4Materials (HPC4Mtls) and the HPC4Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) programs, which are designed to improve the performance of materials in complex environments, improve manufacturing processes, address products’ lifecycle energy consumption, and increase the efficiency of energy conversion and storage technologies by providing access to national lab supercomputing resources and expertise for high performance computing projects. This spring solicitation will include the HPC4Mtls program, sponsored by the Hydrogen with Carbon Management and the Point Source Carbon Capture programs within the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM). The spring solicitation will target qualified industry partners to participate in short-term, collaborative projects with DOE National Laboratories that
address key challenges and accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy technologies to move us closer to the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Eligibility for the program is limited to entities that manufacture products or operate systems in the United States for commercial applications and to organizations that support these entities. The solicitation will encourage applicants to partner with a diverse range of universities, community colleges, and non-profit organizations, especially those located in disadvantaged communities. This focus ensures the equitable use and benefits of HPC national laboratory resources and technologies. Selected projects will be awarded up to $400,000 to support computing cycles and work performed by DOE National Laboratories, universities, and non-profit partners. All DOE National Laboratories are eligible to participate. The industry partner must provide a participant contribution of at least 20% of the total project funding. This anticipated funding is part of DOE’s Technologies for Industrial Emissions Reduction Development (TIEReD) Program, which leverages resources across DOE’s applied research offices to invest in fundamental science, research, development, initial pilot-scale demonstrations projects, and technical assistance and workforce development. Rooted in the principles identified in the 2022 Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap, DOE is building an innovation pipeline to accelerate the development and adoption of industrial decarbonization technologies. The Hydrogen with Carbon Management program (https://www.energy.gov/fecm/hydrogen-carbon-management) within FECM (https://www.energy.gov/fecm/office-fossil-energy-and-carbon-management) is the primary sponsor of the HPC4Mtls program. FECM minimizes environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuels and industrial processes while working to achieve net-zero emissions across the U.S. economy. The HPC4EI program has historically been supported by the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) and the Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO). Detailed topics of interest to the participating offices will be included in the upcoming solicitation. Learn more about the HPC4EI initiative (https://hpc4energyinnovation.llnl.gov/).
