Procure services to repair the trim pump motor on the steel caisson utilized at the Kings Bay dry dock. The trim pump is rated at a maximum of 6000 gpm at 20mA with a pump speed of 60 Hz. The pump repairs are required to be completed by 21 September 2021. The trim pump is required to remove water from the tanks.As part of the scope, the Caisson overhaul scope includes blasting and coating of the interior structural steel, replacing of the seals and monel studs, replacement of the sacrificial anodes, as well as overhaul of the electrical system. There is no work included on either of the trim pumps or the main pumps with the notable exception that the overhaul of the electrical system includes revising the connections associated with these pieces of mechanical equipment.When assessing the systems, the contractor tested one of the trim pump motors and found there to be excessive resistance, which is a sign of standing water within the motor itself. The trim pump as it stands currently
is not functioning, but an operative pump motor is required to perform operational tests at Boston Shipyard and to certify the Caisson prior to reseating it at Kings Bay. Repair work on the Caisson trim pumps is performed while the Caisson is not submerged; therefore, the work would need to be performed at a dry dock facility.This critical work needs to be completed prior to the completion of the overhaul in Boston which is anticipated to be the beginning of September 2021. Operational testing begins on 21 September 2021 at the Boston Shipyard. Operational test will include running the pump motors after the Caisson is partially submerged to ensure the electrical connections are correct.
