Environmental Protection Seasonal Resource Assistant

Introduction The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Marine Fisheries Program (MFP) is conducting two surveys of marine recreational anglers along CT’s coastline in order to collect fishing trip information. This information includes quantities of kept and released fish, their associated length/weight measurements and other trip effort data. Anglers will be recruited by DEEP staff to voluntarily report their fishing trip information through intercept questionnaire via an electronic tablet and also with a post marked angler survey catch card. Angler survey data is used to determine recreational harvest of marine fish species, which is critical for stock assessment purposes and ultimately for managing the marine recreational fishery. The Marine Fisheries Program is seeking candidates to fill six month marine Seasonal Resource Assistant positions. Location: DEEP Marine Headquarters in Old Lyme, CT. Employees would be expected to drive

to Old Lyme each workday whether for office work or field work. Field work ranges from Greenwich, CT to Stonington, CT. The work week is based on 35 hours with working weekends and holidays required since most fishing efforts occur during those days (days off are during the week but the work schedule is extremely flexible). Field work may occur between the hours of 8am to 8pm. Salary: Pay rate is $12-14/hr. depending on relevant education and experience. No benefits. Selected candidates must be fluent in English, possess a valid driver's license, be at least 18 years old, be highly responsible and make decisions independently. Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Job duties include interacting with the fishing public, interviewing marine anglers from shore, boat launches, at marinas and also on party/charter boats. The job duties may also include: distributing angler survey catch cards to boat anglers at selected fishing sites along the Connecticut coastline, along with organizing data sheets, and performing data entry. Additional duties consist of answering questions queried by the public and providing fisheries related information including fishing regulations. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY Ability to follow instructions. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preferred applicants will be able to work full-time for the full six months and have related experience or training. actively pursuing or have recently completed a college degree in the biological sciences with coursework in fisheries or a related field; degree is preferred but not required proficiency in marine fish identification proficiency in use of Microsoft Access proficiency in data entry and data analysis experience with fishing or boating experience in field data collection good interpersonal skills SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate. 2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following: a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license. b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides. c. College training in a specific field. d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities. 3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class. 2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
