Animal Care program has utilized digital radiography technology consistently over the past several years to assist in enforcing the Horse Protection Act (HPA). Digital radiography is a form of X-ray imaging, where digital X-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. Advantages include time efficiency through bypassing chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Also less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional radiography. Digital radiography has shown to enhance the Horse Protection Program inspection process by allowing us to visualize areas that the naked eye cannot see. It has become an additional diagnostic tool that is used to obtain objective and scientific data to help identify sore horses. We have been able to locate in the foot of the horse prohibited metals under the current HPA regulations as well as deformities to bony areas of the foot that are significant findings of a sore horse.Vetel Diagnostics has supplied USDA Horse Protection with several pieces of equipment to include digital radiography and thermography. Their customer service/support has been exceptional and their software is easy to use.
