This work is part of the required mitigation plan for the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP).  The marsh restoration includes excavation and grading of a designated area on Onslow Island (Northing: 782,928.2516; Easting: 974,087.2680), within the Savannah River at the confluence of the Front River and Middle River and is within the boundaries of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

Savannah Harbor is located at Savannah on the northern coast of Georgia and the southern coast of South Carolina in Chatham and Jasper Counties, respectively. The Savannah River is the line of demarcation separating Georgia from South Carolina. Savannah Harbor Dredge Material Containment Area (DMCA) 14A, located along the Savannah River directly east across from Elba Island, lies in Jasper County, South Carolina.

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) includes a mitigation feature to construct a fish passage and floodplain bench at the NSBLD site. The nature-like rock weir fish passage was designed to address passage of the entire suite of native aquatic life in the Savannah River while addressing hydraulic, geomorphic, stability and safety issues based on proven concepts in nature-like fish passage.

The dredged material will be removed from Statter Harbor, during the Statter Harbor expansion project. Disposal activities will be conducted over 30-45 days. It is estimated that two barge loads of material will be transported and deposited per day, approximately four hours apart. The requested deposit site is approximately 63 acres in size.
